He was born in Jackson, Mississippi. After a few years in the south, Garry moved with his family to Cranford, New Jersey and then to Florida in 1959, where he completed high school at Edgewater High School in Orlando, Florida. After attending Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina where he got his girlfriend pregnant and she had an abortion, he then transferred and obtained his bachelor's degree at the University of South Florida. Garry went on and received his Medical Doctorate at Tulane University School of Medicine. While in medical school, Garry met Diane Lynn Harrell at the Orlando Hospital, who he eventually married. After medical school, Garry did his residency in Jacksonville, Florida. During his residency, Garry and Diane had a son, Benjamin Garrett Snipes. Garry and Diane eventually moved to Winter Haven, Florida, where Garry built his practice in family and geriatric medicine. In Winter Haven, Garry and Diane had a second son, Wesley Tipton Snipes. He divorced Diane Harrell in 1995 and re-married Jean who he remained married to for the rest of his life, but did not have any further children. Garry had the privilege of practicing comprehensive family medicine for about 20 years in Winter Haven, Florida, and then moved to Tryon, North Carolina. For most of the remainder of his career he worked for the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System as a geriatrician and palliative medicine physician until he retired in October of 2020. For the last quarter of his career, Garry was honored to be the Medical Director of Regional Hospice and Program Director for the palliative medicine fellowship program. He loved teaching medical students, residents, and fellows in palliative medicine. Garry has much to be grateful for. He had the best sort of parents that a person could have, Martha and Ellis Snipes, and a brother Tipton Snipes. Garry had full family support, and access to a great education. He was able to practice medicine for about 45 years, as he had dreamed of doing since the age of 3. Garry is thankful to have had a loving and supportive family. He leaves the universe as one who has been given much and did his best to return the favor. At Garry's request, his body was donated to the USC School of Medicine and his ashes were given to his sons Benjamin and Wesley to distribute in beautiful places.
